Effect of estrogen administration on oviposition of the fish, Oryzias latipes.

چکیده

During the breeding season extending from spring to summer, the ovaries of the fish, Oryzias latipes, contain hundreds of follicles, each with an egg at various stages of maturation. Usually, five to fifty eggs are laid by a single female almost every morning(Egami, 1954c). On the other hand, ovaries are small and inactive in winter months. The present author has already reported that small winter ovaries of Oryzias females are caused to develop when fish are kept at 22-26•Ž, and that development of winter ovaries following exposure to higher temperature is inhibited by administration of large doses of estrogens(Egami, 1954b, d). In the present paper, the results of experiments designed to study the effects of estrogen administration on the ovaries of Oryzias latipes in the breeding season will be presented. The author wishes to thank Profs. Yo K. Okada and Kiyoshi Takewaki for their kind criticism and encouragement.

Endosulfan-Induced Biomarkers in Japanese Rice Fish (Oryzias latipes) Analyzed by SELDI-TOF-MS

The objective of this study was to find and validate estrogen-related biomarkers from plasma proteins in Oryzias latipes after exposure to an estrogen disrupting compound, α-endosulfan. The acute toxicity of α-endosulfan on O. latipes after 96 h of exposure was 13.72, 16.18, and 22.18 μg L(-1) for the LC10, LC20, and LC50 values, respectively. To confirm estrogenic disturbance by α-endosulfan, ...

Antiestrogens Inhibit Xenoestrogen-Induced Brain Aromatase Activity but Do Not Prevent Xenoestrogen-Induced Feminization in Japanese Medaka (Oryzias latipes)

In fish, exposure to estrogen or estrogen-mimicking chemicals (xenoestrogens) during a critical period of development can irreversibly invert sex differentiation. In medaka, a male-to-female reversal upon exposure to a xenoestrogen is accompanied by an increase in brain aromatase expression and activity. However, whether this increase is the direct cause of sex reversal is unknown. In this stud...

Reproductive Success and Behavior of Japanese Medaka (oryzias Latipes) Exposed to 4-tert-octylphenol

Japanese medaka (Oryzias latipes), a small freshwater fish used extensively to investigate sexual differentiation and development, were exposed to octylphenol (OP), a known estrogen agonist, to assess its impact on reproductive success. Male and female medaka were exposed to nominal concentrations of 10, 25, 50, and 100 mg/L OP from 1 d posthatch to 6 months posthatch. In reproduction trials in...

Japanese Medaka: A Non-Mammalian Vertebrate Model for Studying Sex and Age-Related Bone Metabolism In Vivo

BACKGROUND In human, a reduction in estrogen has been proposed as one of the key contributing factors for postmenopausal osteoporosis. Rodents are conventional models for studying postmenopausal osteoporosis, but the major limitation is that ovariectomy is needed to mimic the estrogen decline after menopause. Interestingly, in medaka fish (Oryzias latipes), we observed a natural drop in plasma ...

Development of vitellogenin assay for endocrine disrupters using medaka (Oryzias latipes).

An enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) was developed for the detection of the egg yolk precursor vitellogenin (VTG) in the liver of medaka (Oryzias latipes) and was employed to establish an in vivo testing system for estrogen and estrogenic compounds using liver homogenates. Results of 3-month-old fish exposed to three reference chemicals (ethynylestradiol, methyltestosterone and flutamid...
